It's hard to ignore the advantages of VLC: flexible, free, easy to use. It accepts a wider spectrum of media including a number that Quicktime outright rejects , and easily plays subtitles.
Most of the time, I find myself using VLC, if only because you can play just about anything. In its Pro version, Quicktime has its own special advantages. There's a slight bump in speed, as well. I find myself using both, but can't imagine doing my computing with only one. One only wishes that the latter, an essential app, could view a wider variety of content.
Mahojas Sep 15 I find the Apple DVD player outdated and useless after changing the region code 5 times. Was the region code system not abolished in the late 's? I travel a lot and now after only a short time, needing to change the region codes 5 times, I have to depend on VLC to play my DVDs, which come from various countries.
Why does Apple still have to follow such outdated codes when everyone else doesn't? I suggest Apple should concentrate on one media player that does everything-- Quicktime, DVD Player, Front Row -- all should be one application--region free. Wasn't Apple able to think of such a thing yet? Most surprisingly not. If any legal problems would arise out of this, I'm sure Apple's legal department could take care.
Culture-Of-One Aug 28 I would love to recommend this version of QuickTime. That is, assuming it worked. Massive numbers of playback issues have been reported about this version on forums all over the world. Apparently it is incompatible with Rosetta, and the webplugin messes up all QuickTime content in Safari, but my problems have been with the application itself.

Basically, all data in the file is deleted and it is replaced with nothing. This bug is usually triggered when updating Mac OS X and every update to Mac OS X has the potential to render your system unbootable depending on if the "right" file is deleted or not.
It's triggered during the "Optimizing System Performance" phase of installing an update. If you launch an application that links to libraries that are not yet prebound, there is a chance one of those files will be zero'd out as dyld automatically redoes the prebinding on that file. I've been tracking this particular bug for about 18 months now. Most of the real "random" failures reported on various Mac OS X "troubleshooting" sites after a user has installed an Apple software update are actually manifestations of this bug.
By real I mean not imagined problems or ones that have been there for a very long time but the user is just now noticing it and artificially connecting the cause to the recent update it's called Pareidolia. Full screen with a bunch of other apps running, there was no stuttering and the audio and video stayed in sync.
